Bathroom Floor

Style: Poetry

Statement: This poem is an offshoot of memoir I wrote about the highs and lows of life, and as one of the lows I remembered a particular moment where the world seemed to crash down and I found myself on bathroom floor. The bathroom is private and secluded, which can be associated with secrecy and loneliness. But for me, while is can symbolize rock bottom, pain, and suffering, it can also represent a chance to start anew. Going through lows is something everyone experiences, but is often overly stigmatized; I wanted to express to the reader that it's okay to be on the bathroom floor, that life won't move on without them, and they can stay there as long as they need.

There's a time in every person's life,

Human's, I should say,

Since it is a very human thing,

Where you'll find yourself

Down on the bathroom floor.

Maybe gravity has failed you

Or the laws of physics don't apply

But you'll find yourself fallen down,

Down on the bathroom floor.

Maybe the sheer weight of the world

has brought you to your knees.

Maybe life has given you

a blow to the stomach

Maybe your wrists are crying,

you are crying,

and now, you're drowning.

But either way, you double over,

you fall down,

down on the bathroom floor.

It's an interesting thing

to be on the bathroom floor.

The cold tiles leeching off you

warmth,

maybe the bathroom

was lonely too.

Maybe in the quiet solitude

of you, your pain, and

the bathroom floor,

you lean on each other.

Maybe the bathroom floor steals

your heat, but maybe the hardness,

the solid solid floor

makes it seem as though

life can no longer

be pulled out from under you

now that you're already

down on the bathroom floor

Maybe

just maybe,

it's okay to be on the bathroom floor.

It's okay to rest your bones,

It's okay to not get up.

Maybe what you really needed,

To stabilize your life

and to reorient yourself

was to fall.

To fall and fall and fall then lie

on the bathroom floor
