Style: Poetry

Statement: In “the buzzing” I give form to my intrusive thoughts as a persistent, physical buzzing sound that follows me through my everyday life. Inspired by my own experience with what may be tinnitus, I wanted to convey the relentless, attention-seeking, and bothersome nature of these thoughts, giving readers a sense of something they can’t escape.

the buzzing it

follows me around and

infiltrates my senses piercing

my peace of mind without

a second thought

the buzzing hides

in quiet it creeps into moments

turning silence into static and

echoes into the roots of the canal

the buzzing shifts with mood sometimes

it’s head-spinning other times

floating like a gentle melody in the background of a

bustling atmosphere

the buzzing persists and

I forget the sound of stillness

years later it amplifies remaining

the only constant in a crazed time

but at least I’ve got the buzzing!

never late, never leaving

a lullaby I cannot escape
